List of things to remember about design

A list of things I have discovered over the 3 years of my degree and that I want to remember as I make the move into industry.

September 2023

  1. Say “yes!”

  2. Start on paper (read a book, write notes, sketch…)

  3. Everything is a process: there are no stages of design, only a continually evolving process of learning, developing and being inspired

  4. The ‘target audience’ are real people — always focus on enhancing their real experience

  5. Research visually

  6. Being curious is important

  7. Talk about your ideas, these conversations always develop new ideas

  8. Think deeply and consider everything

  9. The best ideas come when you are in the shower or about to fall asleep

  10. Always design in a way that's true to yourself, always create work you are proud of and proud to stand behind

  11. Don’t sell yourself short

  12. The future is moving

I turned my list into a postcard and have been collecting responses from people in the creative industry that I have met at my degree show, networking events and interviews. I have begun developing some work from these responses so I can create a collection of design that shares advice from all sorts of amazing people with amazing advice.

Below is the first example of my posters, taking advice from Phil Cleaver…
