How did I get here?
For a while I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted to do. Certain choices directed me on the path I’m now on, but how did I get here?
June 2023
I always knew I was creative and enjoyed art, so after my A levels I did a foundation year in art and design to discover what my passion was. I went in with an open mind and gave everything a go — from creating a portrait painting with makeup on a latex canvas, to playing with experimental typography, to becoming obsessed with zines, collage and printing.
My foundation tutor recommended the HND in Graphic Design with Photography at the same college as a natural progression from my specialism into visual communication. I knew I didn’t want to study at university (I wanted to jump straight into work) so continuing to study at college was a good alternative. The COVID pandemic hit at the end of my foundation year, and in my time at home before my HND began, I focused on anything and everything creative, including painting and creating pebble art. When my HND started that September, I was studying three days a week and filling the rest of my time with my side interests: I continued painting, drawing and making. I worked with a number of local charities and organisations and I continually applied to completions and exhibitions (and was even successful in some!). I also ran workshops, organised fairs and exhibitions, and networked constantly within Leamington’s local creative community.
I was busy to say the least, but it has all helped me to become the determined and passionate creative I am now.
At the end of my HND I was offered a place on the top-up year to get a BA Hons in graphic design with photography. I decided to continue on for the final year to really consolidate my knowledge and push my skills further.
Over the past year, I really found my desire for graphic design: creating deep visual concepts that truly fulfil a client’s brief, providing them with inspiring design. My interests range from print, digital and motion design and converge into a specialism into identity design for brands and campaigns. Everything inspires me to create: I am constantly considering new ideas inspired by everyday things I find in conversations, music, television and film, social media, buildings and nature. I have deep values aligned with creating real positive changes to the world and communicating important messages through the visual language of design. Throughout my studies I have been discovering my true passions and purpose as a creative and I now feel ready for the next step — launching myself into industry.
